In this one-off work, created specifically for Tauranga Art Gallery, Darryn George looks at the shared misfortune suffered by his home of Christchurch, and Tauranga in 2011. He says rata is a very suitable word to use in relation to the Canterbury earthquakes and the Rena environmental disaster, as it translates to mean doctor or healer.
"Both regions need a doctor to heal the land and the people," he says.
