Hannah wynn: joy machine

(Available Saturday & Sunday only in the Learning Centre)

Joy Machine commissioned by Hannah Wynn with funding from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Original artwork created by Paul Darragh.

Hannah Wynn commissioned the Zine Machine to provide a new ‘shop window’ opportunity for Zine makers to showcase and sell their Zines all year round (outside of the traditional Zinefest space). The Zine Machine aims to build awareness of Zines, Zine culture, and Zinefests - increasing access and participation.

Pronounced “ZEEN”, Zines are short-run self-published (maga)zines, touching on a variety of topics from music and art, to politics, sexuality, and humour. Content can be written, drawn, painted, collaged, or any other form the zine maker desires. Culturally and historically, Zines have served as a powerful outlet for content considered to be outside the mainstream, and provide a safe, independent platform of expression for under-represented and marginalised voices.

Tauranga Art Gallery Toi Tauranga will host the Joy Machine at the POP UP Learning Centre (44 Devonport Road, Tauranga) for one month only this Summer!

Open 10am-4pm (Thursday to Saturday only) from 4th of January through to 4th of February 2024. Zines are priced from $2-$10 (cash only).

Visitors may buy a Zine from the Joy machine and/or buy a Zine-making kit to create their very own zine. Tables and equipment will be set up in the POP UP Learning Centre for visitors to use to make their zines.

The Joy Machine will be accompanied by Zine-making workshops (15+ only), facilitated by Hannah Wynn. See our events page for more details.
