Etching became a major medium for picture-making in the Netherlands during the 17th century, the 'golden age' of Dutch art. Rembrandt was the undoubted master of etching, and he fully explored the possibilities of the demanding medium. This exhibition contains ten of his masterful etchings.

Herakles (Hercules), better known as a hero of ancient Greek myth, is cast in this exhibition as a New Zealand pioneer attempting to tame the land. The exhibition is made up of a series of lithographs and etchings by Christchurch print maker Marian Maguire.
Whakarongo features the work of nine Maori artists from as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch. These artists live and work in a multicultural landscape, comfortably crossing between Maori values and the changing face of New Zealand today.
The exhibition invites the viewer to join the artists on a journey to listen to the movements and murmurs facing Aotearoa...
In this one-off work, created specifically for Tauranga Art Gallery, Darryn George looks at the shared misfortune suffered by his home of Christchurch, and Tauranga in 2011. He says rata is a very suitable word to use in relation to the Canterbury earthquakes and the Rena environmental disaster.
"Both regions need a doctor to heal the land and the people," he says.
