Life Drawing Workshops

In conjunction with the exhibition Woollaston: the Wallace Arts Trust Collection 1931 - 1996 we are hosting a series of six life drawing workshops at the Gallery. You are invited to book in to as many as you like. Beginners to advanced students are welcome. Have a go!
We have a mix of nude and partially clothed male and female models lined up and three outstanding tutors:

Graham Crow is a professional artist with strong history of life drawing and painting. His formal art education was undertaken at the University of Canberra as well as further studies at the Waikato Society of Arts in printmaking. Graham regularly exhibits in Tauranga and his work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions at Tauranga Art Gallery. Graham recommends booking in to both his classes for continued development of work.

Stuart Shepherd is an accomplished curator, life drawer, painter and educator, and a proponent of the method of life drawing developed by Kimon Nicolaïdes. Nicolaïdes taught at the Arts Students' League in New York after World War I and wrote The Natural Way to Draw. Stuart is a big advocate for the value of life drawing, having attended many studio classes in New York including the American Illustrators Society and the Art Students' League, and taught life drawing at Massey University for many years. Stuart's workshops will include warm-up exercises and a study of gestural drawing and painting, and will tackle the use of colour and wet media.

James Ormsby received a Master of Fine Art from RMIT and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Melbourne. Drawing is a passion for James, he describes it as his first language. He has been a finalist in both the Art Waikato National and Wallace Art Awards as well as the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards. Learning life drawing about from James will be a magic experience:

“Life Drawing (with me) is an honest zone of practice: no academic wah-wah; it’s like an unplugged kind of music; you are in the moment; make a mark; there’s no touching it up on the computer.” - James Ormsby 2016.

Workshops will run from 5.30pm - 7.30pm on the following dates:
