Natura Naturans: A Moving Image Survey by Denise Batchelor
11 June - 21 August 2016

A sleepy hedgehog, wide-eyed morepork and wind swept hills are a much needed antidote to the frantic speed of our busy daily routines.

Hokianga-based Batchelor captures the quiet moments that we often don’t take the time to see or fail to notice. She focuses in on the details refusing to employ the quick edits of T.V and music videos in favour of a more slow-paced, contemplative approach.

For Tauranga Art Gallery, Batchelor presents a selected survey of her moving image from 2010 to the present. This seven monitor installation, curated in our vault space, will feature well known works by the artist alongside less familiar material.

Batchelor has participated in exhibitions throughout New Zealand and has recently had a major solo exhibition at Aratoi, Masterton. This exhibition featured material from a trip to the Bahamas in 2015 to attend Deep Anatomy, a symposium examining performance and free-diving, which ran consecutively with Vertical Blue, an international free diving competition.

Generously supported by the Friends of Tauranga Art Gallery.

“By taking time to observe, to empathise with other living beings, we may begin to perceive the interconnected and interdependent nature of the world we live in.” ~ Denise Batchelor
