Choice - A changing series of artworks selected from the Tauranga Art Gallery Collection

Zoe Ireland (1912 – 2008), The Utuhina Stream 1950s, oil on hardboard.

This changing display of artwork highlights the gems in the Tauranga Art Gallery Collection. Curated by our Registrar and selected by staff members and people from the community, this project provides an opportunity to see some of the collection and find out a little bit more about individual artworks.

Until May 1, 2016.

Born in Kāwhia, Mrs Ireland moved to Rotorua newly married in the 1940’s and became one of the longest practising artists in the Bay of Plenty region.  Her works demonstrate an interest in colour and arrangement, and also Ireland’s love of the New Zealand landscape. The subject of the painting, the Utuhina Stream, runs through Ōhinemutu in Rotorua and is today a popular fishing spot.

This painting was generously donated to the Tauranga Art Gallery by the artist’s son John Ireland in 2005.

“It is fitting as I depart the Gallery that I am able to share this work with you.  For most of the past three years, where I have been lucky enough to work within this beautiful building, this painting hung on the wall above my desk - taken for granted and viewed by few. It wasn’t until our Registrar ‘educated’ me of its significance that I truly appreciated this art work and the artist behind it.” - Kylie Morgan, Gallery Services Manager
