15 December 2018 - 10 March 2019
Askew One (Elliot O’Donnell) is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist from Auckland with roots in the early 90’s graffiti art scene. He was one of the leading artists for Paradox, a street art festival in Tauranga that took place in early 2017.
Askew One has four outdoor works in Tauranga. One of them is on the Tauranga Art Gallery exterior wall, visible from Masonic Park (image right).
Askew One’s current work is a mash-up of text and portraits concerned with themes of urban life, popular culture and street- scapes. Focusing mostly on painting, he draws heavily from his background in graphic design, still and moving image to create meticulously detailed portraits over layers of bold mark making. He utilises many makeshift tools that became familiar through his experience in painting street art.
His solo exhibition at the Tauranga Art Gallery documents his journey from graffiti to street art to contemporary art.
