ALTER-NATIVE explores the adaptation of new material and technology by a people who were not restricted by customary practice.
The exhibition focuses on the waistcoat and by using customary and contemporary materials, Sykes has produced a version of a garment that was evident in early European society, and then appropriated by Maori.
Mark Sykes (Ngati Rangitihi, Ngati Porou) has recently completed a Bachelor of Arts and Visual Culture from Toi Whakarei Awanuiarangi, majoring in raranga (weaving) and fibre arts, and now lives in Matata.
