Rembrandt to Rata: Four Major New Exhibitions Open
Art lovers are in for a treat in February as four new and diverse exhibitions open at the Gallery.
First up, Dutch Etchers in a Golden Age: Rembrandt and his peers, featuring works of Rembrandt van Rijn, who Te Papa describes as "the undoubted master of etching". The exhibition will run from 4 February to 25 March and is a Te Papa touring exhibition.
Gallery Director Penelope Jackson says it is incredible to think Rembrandt and his contemporaries were fashioning these works around the time New Zealand was "discovered" by the first European explorers.
"It is phenomenal to have works made in the 17th century on display. Te Papa continues to allow us to host high calibre exhibitions. Works by Rembrandt and his circle are a must-see."
Soon after, three exhibitions featuring work by New Zealand artists open.
A large work by Christchurch-based artist Darryn George will be showcased in the Atrium. Darryn George: Rata runs until 20 May. In this one off work, created specifically for Tauranga Art Gallery, the artist looks at the shared misfortune suffered by his home of Christchurch, and Tauranga, in 2011. He says rata is a very suitable word to use in relation to the Canterbury earthquake and the Rena environmental disaster.
"Both regions need a doctor to heal the land the people," he says.
Whakarongo (opening 11 February) features amazing work by nine Maori artists from around New Zealand. Artworks were selected by former Gallery Exhibitions Manager Paora Allen. The work will sit easily alongside George's Rata.
And The Labours of Herakles showcases stunning etchings and lithographs by Christchurch printmaker Marian Maguire. Herakles (Hercules), better known as a hero of ancient Greek myth, is cast as a New Zealand pioneer attempting to tame the land.
