Painting New Zealand: Art from Te Papa 1890 - 1950 on show at Gallery
Painting New Zealand: Art from Te Papa 1890 - 1950 features a selection of 23 paintings from the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Painted between the end of the nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth, they reflect the dramatic change that occurred in New Zealand art during this period.
Gallery Director Penelope Jackson says the works are diverse and interesting.
"It's not every day you get such a fabulous line-up of great artists in Tauranga. i believe our audience deserves to see art of this calibre without having to travel to Wellington. We're very lucky Te Papa have agreed to this loan. it wasn't an easy undertaking getting this exhibition here but I think very worthwhile."
The exhibition includes some of Te Papa's best known paintings, less familiar works and several recent acquisitions. In addition to charting shifts in art and criticism, Painting New Zealand offers a glimpse of how Te Papa's art collection has evolved over time.
Presented with the assistance of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Painting New Zealand: Art from Te Papa 1890 - 1950 is on display at Tauranga Art Gallery until August 21.
