Mischievous granny pays visit to gallery - 13 Apr 2010
Grandma McGarvey is a mischievous granny with plenty of energy, who has been entertaining the young, and not-so-young alike, with her antics for the past 20 years.
Visual creator of the energetic granny, artist and illustrator Trevor Pye, shares some of her tales of adventure at Tauranga Art Gallery at 11am, Wednesday 7 April, as part of the Gallery’s school holiday programme.
Trevor Pye is an illustrator, writer and artist who lives in Tauranga and is well-known as the illustrator of the Grandma McGarvey book series, among others, which has been a popular addition to children's bookshelves for two decades.
Pye has illustrated more than 200 children's books, as well as providing numerous illustrations for The New Zealand School Journal, and illustrating the children's TV programmeHere's Humphrey. But this is only one aspect of his work. Pye is also a painter and sculptor with a numerous list of exhibitions and awards to his name.
However for the Gallery’s younger visitors, Grandma McGarvey’s latest exploits take precedence. Children, and their parents, can bring along a gold coin and cushion on Wednesday 7 April, and enjoy whatever mischief she has planned for us next.
As well as story telling, the Gallery is also running a series of workshops for school children throughout the holidays. The workshops will be based on making two- and three-dimensional fluorescent constructions, inspired by the works of Judy Darragh whose recent installation Throw Up is currently in the Atrium.
The workshops are aimed at 6-8 and 9-11 age groups with a cost of $10 each. Bookings are essential on 578 7933.
