Pacific Curls return to Tauranga

Acclaimed Pacifika group, Pacific Curls is currently touring the country as part of the Arts On Tour New Zealand 2010 programme, with their unique blend of Celtic and Pacific sounds.

The talented trio are playing at Tauranga Art Gallery, at 7.30pm, Saturday 6 March.

Pacific Curls played at the Gallery last year as part of the Arts On Tour programme, wowing the audience with their lively and innovative music, and infectious personalities.

The group combine fiddle, ukulele, taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments) and vocals with a range of other instruments including cajons, stomp peddles, kalimba, djembe and percussion.

Fresh from an appearance at the Winter Olympics in Canada, Pacific Curl’s special blend of Celtic, Maori, Pacific and other influences has captivated audiences in Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and South Korea, as well as New Zealand.

The group, featuring world class fiddle player, Sarah Beattie, virtuoso ukulele player Kim Halliday, and stunning vocalist Ora Barlow, say that their unconventional collaboration comes out of a reverence for each other’s cultures.

“We explore the places where we cross over,” says Halliday.

In this latest tour, they will include two performances at WOMAD in New Plymouth and launch their latest CD.

Tickets to Pacific Curls are $25, or $20 for Friends of the Gallery. Tickets are available at Tauranga Art Gallery.
