Alexa Johnston was the curator of Auckland Art Gallery for 19 years. She is now a freelance curator and writer. Johnston was the curator of the Frances Hodgkins: femme du monde exhibition and wrote the accompanying book.

Johnston's illustrated biography Sir Edmund Hillary, An Extraordinary Life, was published in 2005. Her most recent books are on traditional New Zealand baking with recipes selected from personal collections and community contributions, all tested in her home kitchen in Auckland. Ladies, A Plate was published in 2008 and A Second Helping in 2009.
