ROOM 4'S BIG DUMB FIELD TRIP
ROOM 4'S BIG DUMB FIELD TRIP - Wed 11th Nov 2009 - Thu 31st Dec 2009
Film (15 mins), 2001.
A story about a group of time-travelling naughty and curious school children, who witness James Cook’s meeting with Mäori in Dusky Sound, Fiordland.
The live backgrounds were shot on the very sites Cook visited in Dusky Sound as recorded by William Hodges and the Resolution’s log book. The voice of Maru, the Mäori man whom Cook is on record as having met, is the voice of Southland Kaumatua, Michael Skerritt whose whakapapa can be traced back to Maru.
Filmmaker, Mike Bartley, notes: “our assumption about kids liking stories about naughty kids was correct and after the 15 minute film aired on Mercury TV we got stacks of letters from school kids, the majority of which mention ‘Toby’, the naughtiest little kid as their favourite character.”
The making of the film was assisted by Lottery Grants Board millennium funds directed to the project by Invercargill Mayor, Tim Shadbolt.
Mike Bartley and Marcel Currin both now live in Tauranga.
