What the critics and other musicians say

“….When they play together….there is that rare alchemy at work where each inspires the other, where melodies can twist on an emphasis, and the improvisation is instinctively taken in a new and rewarding direction…….It must take something special and rare for Richard Adams and Nigel Gavin to produce music of such diversity yet coherence, to play at the top of their game, but to leave room for each other, to be a master of an instrument, yet let it have its own voice.
-Graham Reid

"….first class musical alchemy!"
"...incredibly wonderfully intelligent!"
-National Radio

"These performers play with a passion and flair that international audiences adore"
-Stephane Grappelli

Performers Biographies

Richard Adams

Richard Adams has become renowned nationally and internationally for his abstract art work, exhibiting in Tokyo, Sydney, New York, London, and in galleries in New Zealand. Classically trained, Adams displays a flair for the jazz violin and has been front man for the popular Nairobi Trio for the past 20 years. He has also received critical acclaim with Neon Quaver and his own Richard Adam’s Quartet. Adams has toured extensively with his music, playing at the Edinburgh and Manly International Jazz Festivals and performing sell-out shows at Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

He published his first book of poems and etchings, ‘Translations' in 1979 and in the same year co-scripted, produced and directed the New Zealand film ‘Artman’. He divides his time equally between music and art.

Nigel Gavin

Nigel Gavin was born in Long Island, New York, and now lives in Auckland. At first a visitor, now a resident, Nigel has long been a featured player in New Zealand's music scene, playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass - indeed, almost anything with strings - with the Nairobi Trio, the Fondue Set, the Jews Brothers Band, the Blue Bottom Stompers, Below the Bassline, Jonathan Besser's Bravura, and his own Snorkel, among others.

He has also found time to create and mentor the multi-guitar group Gitbox Rebellion and to perform in collaborative ventures such as the free-jazz Vitamin S, often using other instruments such as the Chinese sheng.

Nigel has contributed scene-stealing solos to an astonishing variety of musical groups and settings, bringing with him the dedication to the guitar that earned his place in Robert Fripp's legendary League of Crafty Guitarists.
